In 1866, numerous ships report sightings of a mysterious sea creature, thought to be a gigantic narwhal. The U.S. government organizes an expedition aboard the frigate Abraham Lincoln to find and eliminate the creature. Professor Pierre Aronnax, a French marine biologist, joins the expedition along with his servant Conseil and Canadian harpooner Ned Land.
After months of searching, the ship encounters the creature, but it turns out to be a submarine, the Nautilus, commanded by the enigmatic Captain Nemo. Aronnax, Conseil, and Land are taken aboard, where they learn Nemo has exiled himself from land-based governments and now roams the oceans conducting scientific research. However, Nemo also harbors a deep desire for revenge against those who destroyed his homeland.
The trio experience numerous adventures aboard the Nautilus, visiting underwater realms such as coral reefs, shipwrecks, and even the legendary Atlantis. They witness the perils of the ocean, including giant squids and an iceberg trap at the South Pole. Throughout their journey, Captain Nemo oscillates between scientific curiosity and bitterness, particularly after attacking a warship from the nation that wronged him.
As life aboard the submarine deteriorates, Ned Land plots an escape. The group manages to flee just as the Nautilus drifts into a deadly whirlpool. The fate of the submarine and Captain Nemo remains a mystery, leaving Aronnax and his companions safely washed ashore on an island off Norway.
